So far this academic year, the School Council have been very busy. They have organised and packed over 20 shoe boxes to send as part of the Shoe Box Appeal, helped raise over £300 for the Children’s Hospital at the Derby Royal by supporting ‘Elf Day’ and have planted bulbs in the newly designed friendship garden for us to enjoy.
During the winter months, School Council regularly fed the birds, put out a hedgehog house and set up frog house in the front garden to support our wildlife.
At the end of Spring term, the School Council enjoyed leading the Big Walk and Wheel initiative- that focuses on travelling to school in a safe and healthier way. To celebrate the end of this initiative, there were so many wonderful entries in our ‘Bling your Bike/ Sparkle your Scooter’ competition- it was very difficult to choose the winners.
School Council are going to continue improving our school environment over the Summer term with a focus on nature, litter and parking.

Last year the school councillors have been part of activities to celebrate our new library. They have toured and voted on the book corners in each classroom – well done 6SD!
The councillors officially opened the new library with author Caryl Hart. With more planned to celebrate reading, the school councillors are excited about what is to come.
A big project the councillors will be working on this year is regenerating the friendship garden, working with the eco-ambassadors and gardening club. Our aim is to dig out the planters and plant in lots of wonderful new sensory plants including different herbs and wildflowers to help local wildlife. We hope to make the area a fun and relaxing space for all children to use.

In 2022, our school council helped Paralympic Gold Medallist and canoeing superstar Emma Wiggs to officially open the new Aldi store on Rykneld Road. She then joined us in school to give a motivational assembly to the children.
Emma spoke to the whole school about the things that she needs to be the best that she can be at her sport, encouraging the children to always try their hardest. She talked about equality and how her disability had not hampered her determination to succeed. She also went on to announce the winner of a school-wide competition, designing a healthy eating poster.
Afterwards, she spoke to the school council about the similarities of their roles — for her she represents the country, the children represent the school—and the pride that this generates.

She presented them with fruit and veg donated by Aldi.
